Configuring XML sitemaps, robots.txt, and Google Search Console in 30 minutes or less

Google Search Console and Yoast SEO are two great tools to help improve your website’s search engine ranking, but if you don’t set them up correctly from the beginning, they may not be as effective as they could be. Luckily, getting these tools to work together isn’t very difficult; in fact, you can do it in just 30 minutes or less.

Before we begin

Make sure your site is properly configured to allow search engines to crawl all of your pages. With Yoast SEO Premium you can do just that with ease!

Step 1: Create an XML Sitemap

The first step to configuring your site for search engine optimization is creating an XML sitemap. By uploading a file that contains all of your site’s pages into a search engine’s database, you tell it what content exists on your website and how important those pages are. Each page will be assigned its own importance rank, which allows search engines to more accurately reflect its rankings based on how frequently a page is viewed by users.

Step 2: Add a Robots.txt File

Create a folder called robots at the root of your site and add a file named robots.txt inside that folder. This will signal to search engine crawlers which sections of your site you want to be indexed by search engines.

Step 3: Add to Google Search Console

Google is your friend! Whether you’re doing technical SEO for an ecommerce site or focusing on getting social media shares for a local business, search engines can be your friends if you know how to use them. One of my favorite tricks is to start with Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) and add data that Google isn’t going to pick up on its own.

How to Do This on WordPress

The first step is to install the WordPress Yoast SEO plugin (if you haven’t already). This is a very powerful plugin that helps improve your search engine rankings. I won’t go into detail here about how to use it—there are plenty of resources out there if you want to learn more about optimizing WordPress for search engines (hint: start with Yoast). My goal here is simply to walk you through configuring some of its features in order to improve your website’s technical SEO.
